First
released in 2004, Ubuntu is a free and open-source Debian-based Linux operating
and distribution system. Ubuntu is built using the Debian infrastructure and
consists of servers, desktops, and the Linux operating system.
Since
its release, Ubuntu has become a favorite of many people because this operating
system is easy to install and use. The default desktop environment for Ubuntu
is known as Unity, a desktop environment that has a powerful search tool to
find all your applications and documents. This desktop environment also
integrates with other applications such as audio player, video player, and
social media.
Besides
Unity, you can also use other environments such as GNOME, XFCE, MATE, KDE, and
LXDE. Not only that, there are several specific versions of Ubuntu that are
designed to work with those environments such as Lubuntu, Xubuntu, Ubuntu
GNOME, Ubuntu MATE, and Kubuntu.
Maybe
you are wondering, how could an operating system as good as Ubuntu be used free
of charge? Ubuntu is managed and funded by a company called Canonical. The
company was built in 2004 by a South African businessman, Mark Shuttleworth.
Canonical itself gets money from commercial support that they offer to
companies that use Ubuntu. The income from commercial support is then used to
continue developing Ubuntu. Canonical is also responsible for releasing the
latest version of Ubuntu every six months, taking care of security, and hosting
servers for the Ubuntu online community.
Because
Ubuntu is open-source, Canonical has the support of Ubuntu users in developing
Ubuntu. Many people on the internet are not stingy to share knowledge about
Ubuntu, ranging from answering Ubuntu user questions (on websites like Ask
Ubuntu), writing user documentation, giving feedback, to testing bugs in
software. So, if you are interested in helping, you can too!
